3D Text VFX

TITLE: 3D Text
YOUR ROLE: Director/Lead VFX Artist
MEDIA: Visual Effects
SOFTWARE: Adobe After Effects
DURATION: 0:24
CLASS: FMX 322
PROFESSOR: Javier Olarte
SEMESTER / TERM: FA 23
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa
DESCRIPTION: One unique feature that After Effects has is what are known as ‘3D Cameras’ which can scan footage and create tracking nodes so that other 3D elements can be accurately placed into a scene. In the case of this project, I used this clip of three provided to make a movie or short film introduction sequence, utilizing 3D Text to make the text feel like part of the environment rather than simply static. I also wanted it to interact with the environment itself, which is why I have the first piece of text be ‘dragged’ in by the second passerby at 4 seconds in. After that, I made a simple mask around the red car to make the text disappear while two more pieces of text are carried in, that being the main title of the ‘movie’ on the top of the car that slips off followed by another car dragging in the credits to who made the film.

MOCHA VFX

TITLE: Mocha VFX
YOUR ROLE: Director/Lead VFX Artist
MEDIA: Visual Effects
SOFTWARE: Adobe After Effects
DURATION: 0:20
CLASS: FMX 322
PROFESSOR: Javier Olarte
SEMESTER / TERM: FA 23
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa
DESCRIPTION: After Effects offers a variety of different features and addons, a rather useful one being Mocha, which can be used to apply tracking nodes to footage so that other elements follow those nodes. For this project, my task was to apply such tracking nodes to the road sign featured in the video and use it to simply add whatever I pleased. I decided to create a blank highway sign in a pre-composition, getting the colors and the tracking as accurate as I could. Part of the lower left right corner wanted to lift up completely during the track process but I eventually made it lower back down in size. From there, I applied animated text to turn the road sign into something of a title sequence, again color matching with the actual text part of the original footage.

Multiplicity

TITLE: Multiplicity
YOUR ROLE: Designer
MEDIA: Digital Media
SOFTWARE: Adobe Photoshop
HARDWARE: Canon EOS 5000
SPECIFICATIONS: 145 x 92 x 70 mm
CLASS: FMX 210
PROFESSOR: Allan Hampton
SEMESTER / TERM: FA 22
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa
DESCRIPTION: As the title implies, the point of this piece was to take at least six instances of myself and add them to a single environment seamlessly while telling a story. In the case of my image, I decided to have it where the other ‘Justin’s in the image were gathering around, and one decided to prank the other. After deciding the poses I’d be doing and finding a suitable environment to work with those poses, I grabbed my camera equipment and had my brother take multiple images during the mid afternoon where the sun was bright but not incredibly warm. From there, I compiled the images in order of which ones had elements that overlapped one another before cropping out each ‘me’ in their respective images, making sure to preserve elements such as shadows to make it as realistic as possible. Finally, I adjusted the brightness and contrast on some of the layers to match the single one that I was using as the ‘reference’ layer, making all six images blend perfectly together at the seams.
