DESCRIPTION: (L)on(e)ly is the culmination of my skills developed in storytelling, set design, animation and editing throughout my years at the University of Tampa, showcasing what I have learned since my arrival and who I am as a creator in the FMX program. (L)on(e)ly is many things besides that, a unique idea among many I have put to film, a statement about technology interacting with humanity, a love-letter to media I’ve grown up with and so-on. Ultimately I set out not to make a revolutionary piece of work or a great magnum opus to eclipse all the work I have made across this page, but simply to tell a story; a story that is equal parts whimsical as it is thoughtful, a story that gives the audience an inorganic character with organic qualities.

I feel my film could be deconstructed in many ways for those aspects, whether that’s making a hand-crafted film centered around a machine in a year dominated by an ‘artificial intelligence’ craze or showcasing that for all the wonders life has to offer, it’s connecting with someone else that truly makes those wonders special. As much as I rather keep the central theme of the film ambiguous due to how I constructed it, I still feel that is indeed the ‘moral’ of the film, if you will: that sapient beings, whether they be us humans, animals, or even digital machines, will always crave companionship. No matter what or who you are, that fact will remain true forever, and I hope that message comes with the assurance that no matter who you are, companionship will never be out of reach.
